The twelve tribes of Israel are named after the twelve sons of Jacob (later named Israel). The order of their births (to four different mothers) is listed below.
Leah (the elder sister of Rachel and first wife of Jacob by trickery of Laban, her father):
Bilhah (Rachel's slave):
Zilpah (Leah's slave):
Rachel (the second wife of Jacob, who worked 14 years for Laban, her father, so he could marry her):
Joseph had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who are sometimes named separately in lists of the twelve tribes. In some later texts, the half-tribe of Manasseh is further divided into its eastern and western halves.
