Summary

John 3:1-21

3:1. There was one of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
3:2. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come as a teacher from God, for no man can do these signs which You do unless God is with him.”
3:3. Jesus answered him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
3:4. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter into his mother's womb a second time and be born again?”
The Sacrament of Baptism
3:5. Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Unless a man be born again, etc. . .By these words our Savior has declared the necessity of baptism; and by the word water it is evident that the application of it is necessary with the words. Matt. 28:19.

3:6. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
3:7. “Do not wonder that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
3:8. “The wind blows where it will and you hear its sound, but you do not know from where it comes and to where it goes. So is everyone that is born of the Spirit.”
3:9. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be done?”
3:10. Jesus answered him, “Are you a master in Israel, and do not know these things?
3:11. “Amen, amen, I say to you that we speak what we know and we testify what we have seen, and you do not receive our testimony.
3:12. “If I have spoken to you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I shall speak to you heavenly things?
3:13. “No man has ascended into heaven except He that descended from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
The brass serpent erected by Moses
3:14. “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up
3:15. “that whoever believes in Him may not perish, but may have everlasting life.
3:16. “For God so loved the world as to give His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish but may have everlasting life.
3:17. “For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by Him.
3:18. “He that believes in Him is not judged. But he that does not believe is already judged, because he does not believe in the Name of the only begotten Son of God.

Is not judged. . .He that believes, viz., by a faith working through charity, is not judged; that is, is not condemned; but the obstinate unbeliever is judged, that is, condemned already, by retrenching himself from the society of Christ and His Church.

3:19. “This is the cause of condemnation: because the light has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.
3:20. “For everyone that does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, that his works may not be reproved.
3:21. “But he that does truth comes to the light that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.''

He that does truth. . .that is, he that acts according to truth, which here signifies the Law of God. Your law is truth. Psa. 118. 142.
